The Cactus Garden
Is a beautiful cactus garden based in the island of Lanzarote in the Canary Island, situated in the village called "Guatiza".
The cactus was created in 1991 and it was the last project of the famous artist "César Manrique".
You can find about 4,500 examples of 450 species of Cactus from North and South America, Madagascar, and other desert and arid areas.
The botanist Estanislao Gonzàlez Ferrer was responsible for the selection and planting of the specimens.
The garden is in the shape of a large amphitheater, with the plants arranged in terraces. A restored windmill, once used in the production of gofio, stands at th highest point.
The garden in Guatiza is in a former quarry where volcanic sand lililli that are volcanic pyroclast, locally called "picot" or "rofe" was extracted to spread on cultivated areas to retain moisture.
